Eli
Gets Deadline For Leaving Hurst Star
Telegram "I feel like I've let him down. We didn't win." - Pig Owner Cynthia Wynne Hurst - Eli the pig has until June 30 to find a new home. Hurst police notified owner Cynthia Wynne about the deadline this week after voters defeated a May 5 referendum that would have allowed the 175-pound Vietnamese potbellied pig to stay indefinitely. If Wynne does not comply, she could be sited and summoned to Municipal Court. Wynne said she may seek legal counsel, find Eli a new home or place him in temporary quarters until she sells her house. "We haven't made any decisions yet," she said. "We're kind of waiting this week." The City Counsel set the deadline Tuesday after 66 percent of voters rejected a referendum that would have designated potbellied pigs as exotic pets rather than livestock. A 1990 city ordinance requires 40,000 square feet per livestock animal, or almost an acre. The animals housing must be at least 100 feet from any residence, said Debra Brantner, animal services supervisor. Wynne lives on less than a half-acre. She said she often gets upset when she plays with Eli in her backyard. "We didn't win." The news has not been so hard on Eli, although he has lost weight. "He's much better than I am," Wynne said. By
