A Potbellied Pig, the Clarksdale Police Chief and Cookies Dec. 28,
2004 Posted on
Tue, Jan. 04, 2005 Associated Press CLARKSDALE, Miss. - When Dorothy Marie goes for a stroll, a few blocks can take a toll. Dorothy Marie is a 300-pound potbellied pig. On Christmas Eve, the Betty Streett family left their pet pig at home while they went away for the holiday. That night, Dorothy Marie went for a walk in gusty winds and freezing rain. She was spotted about 2 1/2-blocks from the Streett home, her excursion at an end. Neighbor Jon Fiser said it took a community effort and the offering of food to convince Dorothy Marie to return home. "We spent an hour and a half in the freezing cold - and it was cold," Fiser recalled. Fisher said his wife and children had been asked to feed Dorothy Marie while the Streett family was away. "The pig roams freely anyway, to a point," he said. Betty Streett said she can't figure why Dorothy Marie wandered off. "Ice was everywhere. It was a terrible night," she said. Police Chief Steve Bingham and another patrolman arrived on the scene and offered Dorothy Marie cookies in hopes she would follow them. "She wouldn't move for anybody," Streett said. The Fiser family spotted the wondering pig while headed to a Christmas Eve church service. The Rev. David Newton, pastor at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, said had heard excuses "for not coming to church before, but that took the cake," Streett said. "He even mentioned it in his sermon that Sunday, saying 'people sometimes won't respond if you entice them, you have to make them do what's right,'" Streett said. Fiser said the pig finally gave in to the food offering - vanilla wafers and animal crackers. "We couldn't have done it without the police chief and his daughter," he said. |
